A quick run down: Pure celtic kingdom gets romanized and survives fall of Rome, Germanic anglos arrive, dominate and genocide the native Britons, muttification, see themselves as superior than the other barbarian celts who neighbor them, spent the next centuries trying to genocide and kill Wales, which resists for centuries albeit poorly because it's always divided between small celtic principalities that always get divided between the sons of the last rulers.
While all of that was happening, vikings invade the anglo saxons-briton mutts and play the same game on them they played on the Welsh, they establish dominions and declare themselves superior to inferior anglo saxon briton mutts, until they are kicked out because their realms are just transitory administrations from raiders turned glorified landlords.
And when the anglo saxons finally kick the vikings and turn their eyes again to try and genocide the native romanized celts (welsh), a french viking called William comes along and establishes himself as the overlord of a unified England (after the anglo saxons did the dirty work of unification for him), and his sons, french english monarchs, go on the offensive again against the romanized celts (welsh) who continued to fight amongst themselves all this time.
So lastly they, the mutt anglo-saxon-britons and their french kings, succeed in the middle ages after the barons revolt with a king called Edward I who builds a series of castles around Wales and oppresses them forever after.
After that, we have a series of revolts by the Welsh and we see the rise of many Welsh caudillos go try and break away from the french-english kings, sons of this Edward guy, but are ultimately crushed due to England's organizational capacity and size before Wales' small and surrounded size, even if Wales tries to get help from Ireland and hispanic kingdoms (or France I can't recall correctly)
So the revolts are crushed just in time for the french-english kings of England to wish to reclaim their once massive holdings in France by claiming kingship of France altogether, and this creates a 116 years war where Wales is occassionaly attempted to be liberated as a proxy against England but this ultimately fails.
Thus Wales remains oppressed and held hostage by the crown (albeit given a parliament for their own) for centuries, attempted erasure of their identity is carried out several times, but fails, England gets in a series of wars outside their isles which distracts them, they built a world economic zone sorry I meant empire which falls and are left powerless and disoriented for the first time in centuries, which makes them say fuck it and release Wales from the historical grip and give them autonomy in 1997, and today the Welsh and their celt subjects to the crown in the isles are planning to break away from England (England can't help this anymore because it built the very system that enables this self-determination so they're fucked rethorically.)
Additionally, it's very possible King Arthur was a welsh-roman holding out the last of the old way before the anglo and saxon germanic invaders.
I know I haven't said a lot on Wales itself but honestly I am barely starting to learn about them myself. Read the Atemporal thread on /qa/
