>Direct peer-to-peer ad-hoc/packet-injection transport (wlan plugin), which allows GNUnet to communicate directly over a wireless card via raw packet injection without needing an access point or an active internet connection (ideal for mesh/disaster scenarios).
Holy fuck, so all you need is an AR9280 to use this and no network connection! I looked it up and this is what I found:
>Yep, exactly! That is the beauty (and madness) of the transport-wlan plugin.
>Because it hooks straight into the mac80211 layer and uses raw packet injection, it completely bypasses the OS networking stack, IP addresses, DHCP, routers, access points, and upstream internet entirely.
>The AR9280 (powered by the legendary ath9k driver) is basically the gold-standard hardware for this exact kind of low-level wireless work because it has bulletproof open-source driver support for monitor mode and packet injection out of the box.
>When you spin it up:
> * Two machines with compatible cards just need to be forced onto the exact same physical Wi-Fi channel (e.g., channel 1).
> * GNUnet encapsulates its traffic directly into raw 802.11 frames injected straight through the card.
> * Nodes discover each other organically over the airwaves in a peer-to-peer ad-hoc fashion without ever "associating" with an AP.
It's essentially purpose-built for offline mesh networks, tactical deployments, off-grid comms, or surviving total internet blackouts.
All you need is to install this over Linux terminal command line (like Trisquel) and you're done.

Instead of dropping down to raw packet injection at the application layer, you can configure the kernel itself to treat your Wi-Fi cards as a direct peer-to-peer network using native iw and ip commands.
You don't need a heavy software stack-just standard wireless tools already built into your OS:
# Bring the interface down
sudo ip link set wlan0 down
# Switch the card to ad-hoc mode
sudo iw dev wlan0 set type ibss
# Bring it back up
sudo ip link set wlan0 up
# Join a ad-hoc "network" on a specific channel and SSID (no router required)
sudo iw dev wlan0 ibss join MyOffgridMesh 2412
Once connected, assign static IPs to both machines (e.g., 192.168.10.1 and 192.168.10.2 via ip addr add), and you have an instant, encrypted IP layer over raw Wi-Fi using WireGuard running directly between the cards.
You could also instead do that since GNUNet's codebase is massive, so installing it over terminal would be a mess.

You can even turn it from a WLAN into a WAN by getting a bigger antenna and leaving it outside.
