While the history of British fascism from 1932 onwards is typically
dominated by Oswald Mosley and his British Union of Fascists, a smaller and
far more uncompromising organisation already existed before and
alongside it: the Imperial Fascist League. Founded and led by Arnold Leese,
the IFL has been largely forgotten, overshadowed by the BUF's greater size,
publicity, and charismatic appeal. Leese and his supporters sharply rejected
Mosley's movement from the outset, viewing it as insufficiently radical on
racial matters and dismissing it as a compromised or "kosher" form of
fascism. This fundamental disagreement over the centrality of biological
race set the IFL apart as the most extreme and uncompromising voice in
interwar British fascism.

Arnold Leese, a qualified veterinary surgeon who had served in the British
Army during the First World War and later became a recognised expert on
camels while working across India and the Middle East, first encountered
fascism through Benito Mussolini's Blackshirts and the dramatic March on
Rome in 1922. He joined the British Fascists in 1923, even winning election
as one of Britain's first fascist councillors in Stamford, Lincolnshire.
However, he soon broke away, disillusioned by their failure to prioritise
biological race questions and their willingness to accept Jews and former
socialists as members. In 1928 he founded the Imperial Fascist League with
a small group of supporters in London; the group quickly launched its
newspaper The Fascist and formed a blackshirted paramilitary wing called
the Fascists Legion.

The IFL's defining policy was the creation of a Racial Fascist Corporate
State. This authoritarian model combined Italian corporatism (organising
the economy into self-governing occupational bodies) with uncompromising
biological principles that placed Aryan racial-science at the centre of all
national life. It demanded the revocation of Jewish citizenship, the complete
exclusion of Jews from public influence, monetary reform to replace the gold
standard with a goods-based system free of what it called usurious finance,
and the strengthening of the British Empire through strict racialism in the
colonies. As the 1930s progressed the League aligned ever more closely
with German National Socialism. After Leese met National Socialist
propagandist Julius Streicher, the IFL came to see Hitler's movement as the
only true fascism rooted in racial biology; it adopted the swastika
superimposed on the Union Flag, praised National Socialism as the ideal
model, and even denounced Mussolini as a "pro-Semite".

In practice the League concentrated on propaganda, distributing antisemitic
pamphlets and Leese's writings which accused Jews of ritual murder; most
notably his 1938 booklet My Irrelevant Defence: Being Meditations Inside Gaol and Out on Jewish Ritual Murder, which compiled historical cases
anddefended the charge as factual. These materials, along with the newspaper
The Fascist, formed the core of the IFL's output. The group also held public
meetings, often in London, protected by its blackshirted paramilitary wing,
the Fascists Legion. These activities brought frequent clashes with
authority; Leese was convicted of seditious libel in 1936 and served six
months in prison. The organisation deliberately remained small and elitist,
never seeking or achieving mass membership, and stayed on the extreme
fringe even among fellow fascists.

The outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 ended the IFL's public
activities, and Leese was interned for much of the conflict under Defence
Regulations. Released after the war, he continued his campaign through the
newsletter Gothic Ripples until his death in 1956. Although the Imperial
Fascist League embodied the most explicitly racialist and National Socialist-
influenced strand of interwar British fascism, its ideological legacy was
filtered through the distorting lens of post-war popular culture. Caricatured
portrayals of National Socialism and Fascism, heavily shaped by Hollywood
films, sensationalist media, and tabloid imagery, led many later extreme-
right groups to imitate inaccurate, often crude versions of the original
movements rather than the pre-1939 ideological framework that the IFL
had championed.
