>Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975) is a highly controversial film directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini that transposes the Marquis de Sade's 18th-century novel to the Republic of Salo, a Nazi-puppet fascist state in northern Italy during WWII. In the film, four corrupt elites representing the state's authorities abduct 18 adolescents and subject them to extreme physical, psychological, and sexual torture inside an isolated villa, structured like Dante's Inferno. Pasolini used this harrowing narrative as a political allegory to critique the cruelty of absolute power, the horrors of fascism, and modern consumer capitalism, which he believed similarly commodifies and degrades the human body.
