Sweden is the only country in the EU that reports a net uptake of greenhouse gases.
In 2024, the country's total territorial emissions reached 47.5 million tonnes, but this was completely offset by its massive forests, which recovered to absorb 54.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. This leaves Sweden with a net carbon removal of around 7 million tonnes, which equals roughly 0.6 tonnes of captured carbon dioxide per person. The main reason behind this achievement is the country's vast forest areas combined with very low deforestation rates compared to other nations.
