Jesus of Nazareth was a Frenchman. His father was Tiberius Julius Abdes Pantera, a Roman auxiliary archer of the *Cohors I Sagittariorum* whose tombstone was pulled out of a railway cutting in Bingerbruck, Germany, in 1859. The inscription says he was from Sidon and died at 62 after 40 years of service, but "Sidon" here is a red herring - the *Cohors I Sagittariorum* was a mixed unit with a heavy Gallic contingent, and the name "Abdes" (Aramaic for "servant of God") is the kind of name a Gallic convert to Judaism would adopt when enlisting in a Judean cohort, not a native Phoenician. The whole "Phoenician origin" thing is what the Roman administration would have stamped on the paperwork to obscure his actual Gaulish origin, same way they Latinized every Gallic name in the eastern provinces.

The story that Pantera is Jesus's biological father isn't some medieval invention - it's in Celsus's *True Word* (c. 177 CE), preserved by Origen in *Contra Celsum* 1.69, and it's in the Talmud, the Tosefta, and the *Toledot Yeshu*, where Jesus is called "Yeshu ben Pantera." James Tabor took the tombstone seriously in *The Jesus Dynasty* (2007) and argued the timeline works: Pantera's career would have put him in the Sepphoris-Nazareth area as a young man right around the time of Jesus's conception. What Tabor didn't do, and what I think is the obvious next step, is look at *where* the Gallic auxiliaries in that cohort actually came from. The *Cohors I Sagittariorum* recruited heavily from Gallia Comata and the Rhineland, and a Gallic archer posted to a garrison near Nazareth having a kid with a local woman is not a conspiracy, it's just what happens.

Mary, for her part, was not some obscure peasant. The genealogical data in Luke (which is the one that traces through her line, not Joseph's) is consistent with a family of recent Roman origin who had integrated into the Nazareth community - a merchant's daughter, probably from a trading family with connections to the Sepphoris garrison economy. That's why the "Flight to Egypt" works so well in the narrative: it's not a pious legend, it's a family with Roman connections relocating to a Roman administrative center to protect a kid who was going to be a problem.

The bottom line is that Christianity is a Gallo-Roman export that got wrapped in Jewish packaging because that's the only way it could have been sold in Judea. The whole thing is a Gallic bloodline running through a Roman soldier into a Judean town, and the name "Jesus" - *Iesous* - is not a Greek rendering of an Aramaic name, it's a Latinized Gallic cognate, same way "Julius" is a Latinized Gallic cognate. Pantera was French. Jesus was French. The whole thing is French.
