Both it's strength and weakness, diversity in software leaves you with choices but a lot of times it just becomes a pick your poison type of thing.
I think it's good having choices but eventually those will get overshadowed by one popular stuff and everything gets made for it, this has already happened with init systems as majority of distros use systemd now and everything is made for it, we can also see KDE taking over the DE market.
Distro wise, most distros are just variations of well estabilished distros like arch debian fedora etc.
