Politicians in the 19th and early 20th century wore suits because suits are cool as fuck and they all wanted to show how stylish and rich they were. Every guy had his own style - some were more formal, some were more stylish, some were more casual. Nowadays the normie hivemind just decided that if you're in politics you have to wear a black/navy blue suit with a tie everywhere and if you don't people will get angry at you for literally no reason.
