It was a whole thing, there was a plebiscite (WHOSE RESULTS ARE STILL NOT PUBLIC), where majority Slovenes voted who to be with. The biggest issue was not freedom from German opression for the Slavic Yugoslavia, but military service, you had to serve in Yugoslavia and not in Austria. People from carantania (red area) chose Austria (supposedly), and pretty much all of them now speak German. But we also got Styria (green area and much more south, to the border with Croatia), so it was an equal exchange and we are pretty much on good terms now.

Forgot to mention that Slovenes weren't really that opressed in the first place in Austria. Propaganda posters from Austria were in Slovenia and there wasn't really any ethnic cleansing. Just people choosing to learn and speak German because they are Austrian now.
