Discuss your thoughts on education. Traditional instruction vs guided self-discovery, the merits and demerits of compulsory public education, etc.

Flawed, but we need an education system

I view public schooling very negatively, due to its utilization of the prussian school system, placing an emphasis on obedience rather than understanding, the Rockerfeller's didn't send their kids to public schools, despite practically being the architects of it.

I was forntunate enought to have gone to a Montessori school for elementary and middle school. It has its benefits and detractions, the biggest benefit being the mobility granted and self-direction it teaches students.

Although I did well in High School, and am currently in college, I must say that I don't care for academia. I enjoy learning, with it being a hobby of mine, I do feel that school impedes on that hobby, and the time needed for it. I attribute my affinity for self-teaching to my time spent in montessori.

If I become a father, I'd like to homeschool my children (assuming I have a remote job that allows me to dedicate time), homeschooling not only allows kids to become proficient while not being mentally draining, it allows them to be much healthier, being less confining.

Homeschooling turns kids into maladjusted nitwits, people only complain about compulsory schooling because they where too retarded to learn what integers where or because the teacher didn't tell the children that a combustible topiary wrote the book of good ethics

Most people would be okay with trade school in exchange for highschool 9-12.

Not true, the homeschooled chad who joined my class in middle school could do 22 pull ups and was a straight A student, he was also not vaccinated prior, his parents didn't want it messing up his early brain development.

Adding on to this, homeschool children surpass public school children (and potentially private school children) when it comes to standarnized testing.

Public schools provide the bare minimum in terms of studying, combine that with this generation of phone addicted screenagers and you get a barely worth anything establishment thats whole purpose is to serve 11 years,I have no thoughts on private schooling, and I dont like the idea of homeschooling as it removes any social interactions the kids couldve gotten with their peers replacing it by being home all day long

 â„–4163142[Quote]

>>4163141
Home schooling does not remove social interaction because the child can learn faster and have more time to play with friends outside daily.

Compulsory and nationally controlled though? Until the 19th century, such an idea drew great skepticism. Compulsory public education has historically been a means for political and economic control above all else: Spartans and Prussians raising future soldiers and Americans raising future factory workers. On the other hand, independent institutions of education have a long and commendable track record.
>>4163116
Not at all actually. Just to give one example, chemist Joseph Priestly, who independently discovered molecular oxygen in 1775, asserted that government schooling would both limit capacity for independent thought as well as struggle to evolve in pace with new intellectual discoveries and the constantly changing demands of society.

The problem? It is weakness all around me, how I as a small child could question as to why ill-fit poor starving africans choose to have kids, before they build their castle. I have decided to build my castle first. I have decided not to raise kids in poverty or shortages.

You are not the same as me.

1763 was when Prussia started its monopolized and compulsory primary education. While not entirely a purely secular education, for its time it was remarkably secular. An Essay on the First Principles of Government was from 1768.

It wasn't anything like modern public schooling doe, it was meant to make the Prussian youth more effective in military service while US schools where more concerned about making functional workers capable of basic mathematics and literacy

A similar argument could have been made for the Prussian schooling system. It was, for its time, "revolutionary." The three Rs were required nationwide. It was still a transparent yet highly effective vehicle for social control, one that Americans would wield for their own purposes. The Common Schools Movement of the 1830 was used to force the morals of a Protestant majority onto a Catholic majority. Later on, American Commissioner of Education came to be one William Torrey Harris. Harris was a leading figure in American Hegelian thought, seconding Hegel's proposition that state schooling should be used to create a wedge between children and their families and replace loyalty to the family with loyalty to the state.
