He wasn't a classical liberal except for a brief stint in his youth. I would put him in the same category as someone like Sismondi, but Sismondi's illiberal tendencies didn't defy a preference for decentralized order whereas Mill just became an elitist Tory in liberal clothes.

I consider him more objectivist than libertarian and really do not like him. Looking past his repugnant support for Israeli-American terrorism, he has a tendency to support absurd ideals like "voluntary" slavery being ok and his preference for open borders. That he has defended things like a hypothetical child being sexually abused by an old rich man in the interest of "playing Devil's advocate" makes me think he's genuine scum.
