Christianism always proliferated from an educated interest group converting elites and creating a specific christian aristocratic culture and then going down by converting the population either willingly or unwillingly, by either priests of swords, naturaly or unnaturally
thats why chrustianism has both latin tridentine elite circles and more native national folk christian circles (both good and acceptable im more of a folkist christian myself)
while paganism Is the opposite
it takes the faith of the masses, the populus, the ancestral traditions and beliefs, and slowly morths and interprets and syncretizes with forein philosophy and belief to make an belief for the above
from below to above, first the peasantry, the people, the mass makes, and them those above the mass, warriors priests academics kings merchants intelectuals, interpret the ancestral tradition to make a truth out of it
Christianity takes the truth to shape culture and paganism takes culture to shape truth
