There are 2 workers in an office. The both of them are trying to figure out what birthday their boss has. They have a list of possible months and days. Assistant A knows the correct month of the birthday. Meanwhile Assistant B knows the correct day of the birthday. They both do not know what the correct date is. (assume yourself to be Assistant C)
The possible dates are : March 4, March 5, March 8, Jun 4, Jun 7, Sep 1, Sep 5, Dec 1, Dec 2, Dec 8
A first says:
> I don't know what the bosses birthday is, B doesn't know either.
B replies:
^ I didn't know what the bosses birthday was, but now I DO know
A says:
> Now I know as well.
You (C), seeing this now know the exact birthday as well.
What is the date of the bosses birthday ?

tf does this part mean? did they tell each other what part of the date they had?
â„–4081656[Quote]
>>4081644No they didnt they immediately understood just based off knowing what each other knows. the dialogue is presented as is

March 4,
March 5,
March 8,
Jun 4,
Jun 7,
Sep 1,
Sep 5,
Dec 1
Dec 2
Dec 8
A always has 2 atleast potential choices in regards to the month. B therefore has gained no info about the correct date. he learns nothing from A's answer, as there isn't anything to learn form it, besides that A doesn't know
â„–4081683[Quote]
red herring final answer
â„–4081686[Quote]
>>4081682yeah thats where im stuck. it probably is supposed to be that A knows the date and soeaks up first then that narrows it down. i think OP fucked up
â„–4081688[Quote]

â„–4081694[Quote]
>>4081686nope. A does not know the date at all. He only knows the correct month.
â„–4081697[Quote]
>>4081694ergo red herring, or meta answer
â„–4081698[Quote]
It's jun 7 or dec 2
â„–4081704[Quote]
>>4081700Because the dates repeat in different months bro. So it's one or the other
â„–4081705[Quote]
january 23th
â„–4081714[Quote]
September 1st.
If A knew the month was June, B could potentially know the birthday immediately if his day were 7, because June 7 is the only date with a 7.
If A knew the month was December, B could potentially know immediately if the day were 2, because December 2 is unique.
That narrows down to the March and September
March 4th takes the place of June 4th
We can scratch off the 5th of March and September because it's to ambiguous
December 8th is out so March 8th takes its place
December 1th is out so September 1st takes its place
That leaves us with March 4, March 8, September 1
A says >Now I know as well
So A knows the month now
If A's month was March then it would lead to possibilities. Then the answer obviously is September 1st.

â„–4081761[Quote]
>>4081758Because B knows the day, so it can't be the 5th of March as well as September 5th
â„–4081778[Quote]
>>4081714how about this though :
we can cross out 7 and 2. But now we can use a different approach. From our perspective the only dates that are left are m4, m5, m8 , j4, s1, s5, d1,d8. But we can consider each month from the perspective of A. If lets say the correct month was June then there would only be one option that would lead him to say "i know". Which is june 4. however he didn;t. This means June is completely elimnated now. This only works with June because the rest of the months still have more than one option.
From B's perspective all thats left is m4,m5,m8,s1,s5 d1, d8. Now going through each possibility of a corrrect day, the first still has sep and dec to choose from. the fith still has march and september to choose from. the 8th still has dec and march to choose from. All these options would have lead B to say "I still dont know". But since he does know, that can only mean that march 4th is the correct date since there is only one possible date that has this day and allows for no possibilities.

A knows the month, B knows the day
A says B can't know
The only way for B to know would be a unique day in a month so if B can't know it can't be december and june
we have mar 4,5,8 and sep 1,5 available
B now knows
the only way for B to know is for a unique day from the two so sep1 it is then

okay.
So we can deduct, based on the given info, that:
the dates with the same month were proposed by the A
the dates with the same number were proposed by the B
There is a maximum of 3 identical months and the minimum of 2, meaning that A proposed 2 or 3 times, and all the other suggestions were made by B.
So let's assume that A proposed all the March dates. Then all the other dates must have the same number, which they don't, so move on.
So let's assume that A proposed all the June dates. Then all the other dates must have the same number, which they don't, so move on.
So let's assume that A proposed all the September dates. Then all the other dates must have the same number, which they don't, so move on.
So let's assume that A proposed all the December dates. Then all the other dates must have the same number, which they don't, so move on.
Clearly our assumption that their guesses must always be true with information they hold is false. Uh oh, how unfortunate
