The Andronovo culture was a Mid to Late Bronze Age archaeological culture of the Central Asian Steppe. It's material culture and population appear to have been an Eastward migration from the 1000 year earlier Corded Ware culture of North Europe, and its bones genetically identical to them. The people of the Andronovo culture are genetically most similar to Scandinavians and Scotsmen, and they all carried the same male lineage, R1a-z93, which is the dominant male lineage in Afghanistan, Pakistan and North India, and is higher among Brahmin and Kshatriyah castes than lower castes generally. Modern historians believe that the Andronovo culture are the source of the Proto Indo Iranian languages, and called themselves the Aryans.


The most common picture that emerges from the Indian Rigveda and Atharvaveda, of houses Aryans dwelled in, is of a practical, agrarian dwelling built from locally available materials.
Structure: The basic frame was made of timber pillars (sthuna or skambha) set into the ground, supporting a roof. The walls were often formed by reed or wattle work plastered with clay, and the roof was thatched with straw or reeds (chadis)
Layout: A typical house had a central hall that served as the main living and ritual space, with side rooms arranged around it. It typically included a women's apartment (patninam sadana) and a store room for sacrificial supplies (havirdhana)
Features: The doorway (dur) was a significant feature, often with decorated timber doorposts. A covered verandah or balcony (alinda) could run around part of the structure

The word harmya in the Rigveda is used to mean "house" or "dwelling". However, philologists note that its original meaning was "fire-pit" or "hearth"-a shallow depression in the ground for holding fire

Houses identical in construction to these descriptions have been found at archaeological sites in South Asia.

English Translation

"When irreligion prevails, O Krishna, the women of the family become corrupted; and when women are corrupted, O descendant of Vrsni, confusion of castes arises."
"Due to the evil deeds of the destroyers of family tradition, all kinds of community projects and family welfare activities are devastated."


Arjuna is making a social argument against the war:

1. War destroys families > family traditions (kula-dharma) perish
2. When dharma perishes, women become unprotected and "corrupted"
3. This leads to varna-sankara - the mixing of social classes
4. This mixing brings ruin to the family and its ancestors

Arjuna's logic is that the social fabric will disintegrate if he fights. The word sasvatah ("eternal") is significant-Arjuna is arguing that these family and social traditions are perpetual institutions (sanatana-dharma), and their destruction is catastrophic
