Modern China is little more than a footnote to modern Japan, in terms of material civilization. Japan was the one who figured out how to combine East Asian cultural values with Western industrial technology. China could not do it, since Chinese cultural values are flatly contradictory to notions of "quality control". Chinese resentment against Japan distracts people from the fact that Japan created modern China, and modern China can only modernize itself by imitating Japanese cultural practices(Deng went on tours to Japan(aswell as Singapore) because he thoughtit served as inspiration for what China should become). Actually competent modern Chinese leaders (e.g. Zhou Enlai) received their education in Japan. Virtually all modern Chinese production technology, and much of their infrastructure, was given by Japan in the 1970s-1990s.
