Northern China is pretty homogeneous and unified while southern China is a diverse mess of distinct languages, maybe that's why Hong Kong is more liberal and stuff.
And then there's the borders or frontiers of China which are a whole distinct people (Tibetans, Uyghurs, Mongols, Manchu (there's still 10 million of them but their language is extinct), even SEAmonkey tribes in the south like the Hmong)
