I'm in the process of designing and building a diesel powered brushless DC motor generator for my off grid battery bank.
-100$ 196cc diesel engine
-150$ 72v brushless DC motor
-20$ heatsink + rectifier
-100$ secondary mppt charge controller
-30$ vbelt pulleys
-****$ 48v and 12v batteries
-100+ gallons of filtered old engine oil
-50 gallons of expired gas and diesel and kerosene

1st image is what inspired me. But this guy is using a brushed DC motor from a old treadmill
2nd image is typically what you do if you buy a regulated ac generator, but those are pretty expensive and not versatile (IMO).
3rd image is what I could eventually use that motor with, or maybe even a wind generator (even though those often sound horrible)

I care about this

I ask you to stop colorjeeting

>>3958302
I reclaim the name. Other colorjeets are not people.

 â„–3958320[Quote]

Damn, basically zero people give a fuck about this

Soyshits dont have any interesting hobbies thats why

 â„–3958325[Quote]

Is this better than a commercial generator? Or is it just a fun engineering project

I need the car you owe me the car

You're a company man

 â„–3958336[Quote]

Why

 â„–3958337[Quote]

>>3958336
I mean the off grid battery bank part

 â„–3958338[Quote]

>>3958323
I bought it a while ago, also its a lot more energy effecient, partially because I can use used engine oil with 15% old gas, old as in it can be stale
>>3958325
This specifically is, mostly because of the price. You'd add a zero to my total if you bought it anywhere else. The best part is flexibility, I can charge 48v 36v 24v and 12v just by swapping pulleys or having the engine run at a diff rpm
>>3958336
My place doesn't have full grid electrical hookups. I'm in the sticks.

 â„–3958339[Quote]

>>3958338
>just by swapping pulleys
Also forgot to mention that the literal energy efficiency is functionally the same, all while having the flexibility of buying repair parts.

 â„–3958342[Quote]

What for, saar?

 â„–3958343[Quote]

>>3958342
To charge me off grid battery banks during stormy/snowy season. So I don't have to sip energy, just running fridge/freezer.

 â„–3958347[Quote]

Just had a huge idea too. I could use that to have a diesel hybrid tractor… That would be huge. It would work exactly like a modern diesel train, it would be so energy efficient AND powerful, holyshit
