floating points have a convoluted mathematical implementation which is more complex than integer representation. I'd argue there is no need to use doubles and floats other than like in game engines with vectors and shit.

Data representation for floats is different than ints and sometimes used with no good reason. Apparently assemblers have special instructions for FLOPS, which take more cycles.
