I'm part of an sspx group. I suppose the official reason for the excommunication is because the modern canon is not being followed. But the real reason might simply be that they don't like them bigoted chuds, and they think it hurts the credibility of the church or something

Explanation:
The pope didn't excomunicate them
They tried to conscecrate bishops without papal mandate which leads to an AUTOMATIC excomunication, the pope simply stated the fact that the thing they did made them excomunicated
It wasn't an excomunication done by the pope but rather an automatic excomunication that they did themselves
