While I do understand why the flemish were outcasted by their dutch kin due to them being catholic and the kingdom of the netherlands being largely protestant, why were the wallonians not part of france? My guess is that it was needed as a buffer state to both deter french and german expansion, and eventually stuck with it. That's it for me, not really any more thought about the country itself

albeit, belgian history is really weird. but in the end it just is a buffer state created by the UK to stop any french advances. It wasnt really about germany because it didn't exist yet.
The destiny of belgium depends on belgians and if they are willing to join their linguistic brothers

true that about germany still not existing, maybe prussia? I can't seem to pin point the exact time belgium was created, I know for a fact it existed after the napoleonic wars as Napoleon lost in waterloo, can't remember if it existed before the french revolution or if it was part of the netherlands along with luxembourg.

Also regarding with joining their linguistic brothers, I've seen some belgians debating if learning english and using it as lingua franca to keep the union is a good idea

before the revolution belgium was either in the kingdom or had strong french influence in it. after the revolution many outside kingdoms attacked france so belgium probably got captured by austria. then following the empire, belgians declared their own independence. Aldoe, the coalition leaders weren't so happy about this, so they made belgium a sort of puppet state (not sure doe).

just the idea of replacing BOTH of the languages with english is the most globohomo idea ever. I might be extremly biased but i think that just seceding to get annexed is far better than doing a global language shift.
