Although i can see a distinction between what the catholics do and what happens with the calf. Catholics don't look at a painting or a sculpture or whatever and go "yeah this is my god", which is what the israelites did with the calf. The god or holy spirit or whatever isn't talking through them, and they're not quite like idols. I would describe them more like a family photo or a really coold stature i guess. I'm not a catholic so no idea how they rationalize it, i'm sure they have like 1500 years of doctrine on it because catholics overthink everything.

We don't worship Mary. In Catholicism she is the most important saint and thats why we have such a great appreciation for her.
