The russian empire collapsed before the communist takeover, the February revolution already dethroned the tsar and the provisional regime was very weak and corrupt. The communists just exploited this weakness and took over the country.

Yeah dis, the soviet empire already started showing cracks not very long after the formation of the communist bloc, for example the 1956 revolution in Hungary.
Overall, I think soviet corruption and flaws in the regime were the main cause. I think they could have adopted similar economic system to China.
