yes but in pop history and school history they do say that. it's very difficult for people to comprehend millions of deaths - especially in a war. there are a lot of ways to die in war as a civilian. you can starve, you can die from disease or infection, you can be bombed, you can die from exposure, you can be shot, etc. if you say that they all died the same way, it becomes comprehensible and personally relatable. it's marketing
