We thank them for giving their lives so that we may get stabbed and raped on our ways to the supermarket, to school, to a family reunion, etc.

Iirc, that's a large reason they did enter. Sure, Quebecois felt sorry for the nation of France and its defeat, but they still realized that was their battle to fight. Canadian Anglo conservatives on the other hand have long been enthusiastic to fight on behalf of Anglos fighting on behalf of Jews.
