English modal verbs are called "defective" because they all have missing conjugations. Notably, none of them have an infinitive form. So for example I can say "I can", but I can not say "To can", but rather I have to say "To be able to". This is unlike Norwegian where one can say "Jeg kan" and "A kunne". I don't speak Norwegian so hopefully that's right.
