Even doe the planes couldn't pierce their armor it was still super obnoxious. So the Gunner, Unteroffizier Kramer was like "What if we just shoot them down with the main gun?" And the commander Otto Carius permitted him to do so. What they ended up doing was lining up the gun towards the same spot the soviet planes would attack from and then waited for them to come back around.
