My maternal grandfather played Hockey for the military, though I can't remember which branch. He was also a pretty severe alcoholic (not abusive just really dependent on it), but when they had my mother, he quit cold turkey and just toughed out the withdrawal. A pretty stupid move considering alcohol withdrawal can kill you, but still very impressive. Unfortunately both of my grandfathers died before I was born.
If my grandma is to be believed, my great grandparents on my mother's side spoke Norwegian. It's kind of sad to me that the language wasn't passed down.
