Religion is quite literally the main thing that unified Europe against the Ottomans during the 14th-17th centuries. Had the religious motivation not been there Europe would have likely fallen to an alien people. Their loyalty lied in both their nation and god, their will to defend their nation was motivated by the nation representing them and their religion and it's largely what drove them to fight.
