Also, for the first engagements I think obvious that the roman army would just flee in disarray at the sight of their own soldiers dying like flies giving a significant boost for the rebels. Not to mention that following their escape the slaves had spent years training in the countryside to face off the roman state. Without a doubt as they start running out of ammo they will return to a mixed fighting style, integrating melee fighting and ranged gun warfare. It must also be considered that the original goal of the slaves was to simply flee north out of roman authority, so the question really becomes wether they can succesfully manage to escape, before the roman army can catch up with them.
