Yes but people praise a lot of the older stuff. I grew up watching a lot of the CN and Nick classics. Whenever I go back to one of these “hidden gems”, they’re not that entertaining as an adult. 2003 Teen Titans is just okay, same with Samurai Jack, but people heap a lot of praise onto them. I felt a similar disappointment revisiting Powerpuff Girls and Rocko’s Modern Life. Even one of my favorites as a kid, Invader Zim, is completely insufferable to me now. I just can’t stand that type of internet 2000s humor. Avatar The Last Airbender was particularly bad: I watched the whole thing and it’s dogshit. The humor is terrible and most of the characters are uninteresting. Despite this, people speak of it in the same breath as The Sopranos or Breaking Bad which is totally undeserved.

The only children’s cartoon I can enjoy as an adult is classic SpongeBob. I was never a fan but I watched the first three seasons this year and get the love now. It’s a Simpsons-tier show that just happens to be kid friendly. Billy & Mandy and Ren & Stimpy are also alright but I’m not compelled to watch more of them.

It’s disappointing because Cartoon Network inspired me a lot growing up. Those old shows felt like magic. They motivated me to draw and learn how to animate, so that I could create something similar to the shows I loved. That love has since disappeared, which is probably why I barely draw anymore. I think I just grew out of cartoons (that aren’t for adults like South Park) and I’m kind of sad about that. Maybe it’s a sign of maturity but they meant so much to me, and now I just see them as shallow. Kind of disillusioned.
