Modern SpongeBob isn't just shit it's layers to how garbage it is. Due to its flanderization of its characters, the character dynamics are changed. Back then Patrick Star was a lovable idiot, but now he's an unlikable idiot that acts like an asshole to SpongeBob, is filthy, and his idiocy isn't hilarious anymore, like in The Card where he ruins a rare trading card on purpose just to mess with SpongeBob, and Yours, Mine and Mine where he eats a toy so SpongeBob can't share it. SpongeBob used to be an adult who acted childish at times and still was intellectually competent, but now he's a man-child who cries at little things and his IQ has lowered significantly, which is why Squidward cannot be kind to SpongeBob anymore. Squidward back then was grumpy but had moments of kindness towards SpongeBob, but now his grumpiness is his only character trait and he just completely despises SpongeBob. Sandy Cheeks used to be a Texan lover who loved Karate, but now her character is just to be a plot device Scientist to help SpongeBob out of any bad situation he finds himself in. Since the writers are incompetent and they believe random=good, there are a bunch of modern SpongeBob episodes where unsettling and disturbing things happen, like Squidward in ClarinetLand and To Save a Squirrel. Another issue with modern SpongeBob episodes is how gross it is, like The Splinter episode and The Ballad of Filthy Muck. Due to the writers not knowing how to write characters, they make new side characters that are horrible and unfunny, like Kenny the Cat, the ugly grandmas in the episode where Gary goes missing, and the Slime Witch. Finally, the fourth layer is overusing nostalgia; a lot of modern-day SpongeBob episodes are sequels to older episodes that are basically a lower-quality version of what came before, and they keep doing references to older gags like the "my leg!" gag and Nosferatu.
