The phone call should have taken place earlier, maybe when he ran off on his own (have him see a lone standing phone ringing when he went back for his bag o algo), and it would've massively improved the movie. That one change would make it so much less of a snoozefest since we'd now that SOMETHING would happen at some point in the movie. The tunnel scene is too damn long and dramatic for literally nothing to have happened. Change those two things and it's significantly better.
