The original West Craven was cheesy but a cult classic. it's super grainy and feels like a college made film.
The remake 20 years ago is pretty violent and Gorey but is actually decent. the 20 minutes in of Character introduction is usually boring in 90 percent of films. keep watching it

I think the west craven one is redneck mutants that lived in Nevada testing grounds yet shot in California in Victorville.
but the remake wasn't shot in the USA. it was shot in Ouarzazate, Morocco, and takes place in New Mexico.
it looks like the southwest a lot but says it was filmed in Ouarzazate, Morocco, the gateway of the Saharan Desert. but I know places in California that look dead on like the remake
