I think the issue compared to previous seasons is that at least in the previous ones it was more of just a one-off scene for shock factor instead of a running gag throughout the entire episode or God forbid the season.
The spider man IBS dude wasn't even funny in the first episode he was in, who fucking knows why they brought the fucker back. It was satisfying seeing him get ripped in half by homelander thobeit
The BDSM hughie rape episode also fucking sucked, could've had some gemmy worldbuilding/character stuff and I liked the scene of Homelander convincing the senators to side with him was nice, but it gets ruined by focusing so heavily on one of the characters being coerced into performing sexually depraved acts for extended screen time. It honestly brings the entire rest of the season down a few notches because actually nothing of value comes out of those scenes, they could've been removed from the episode and nothing would've changed.
Also it's pretty funny how for just those scenes they did a complete 180 on their stance on rape, earlier on it was (rightfully) depicted as awful, even when it happened to an actual rapist and murder as revenge (The Deep in S2 iirc). But then it happens to Hughie and suddenly it becomes "hilarious"? Fuck off kripke.
S5 seems to be improving for the most part. I like a lot of what they have in the new episodes and I'm pretty excited for the finale.
