I also agree that stories should be coherent and, most importantly, short, with all unnecessary details trimmed down to a watchable size. So, if you can condense your story, or at least its arc, into a single film, that's progress. Progress has its flaws, I agree, but I admit, if I were writing scripts for my own animated project, I'd also resort to creating films between episodes

Cowboy Bebop also did this, but the movie was basically just a really long episode that took place before the end of the series and had no bearing on its overarching plot.
