Mandolin is great because it's tuned in fifths and that allows you to easily play a scale or go up and down the fretboard. It's a bit too high for me thoughbeit.
Banjo's really simple to noodle around with because it has open tuning, and almost anything can sound good (mainly because everything relies on the key of G). It has great repairability, but I personally don't like bluegrass that much. Irish music is much better imo.
I guess the middle ground here is the tenor banjo (tuned in fifths, only 4 strings, smaller neck), but local availability is scarce.
