Cats are for the people who want to take care of their pet as little as possible, and you can have them in an apartment and there would not be much problem.
Dogs are for people way more involved with their pets, and they require more open spaces to waste energies.
It's to be expected cats are more popular nowadays knowing people are more focused on their phones and goyball game, and decide to neglect other things such as mascots or family; and also because we are everyday closer to the pod, and a dog would die of boredom there.
The fact cats are more popular is evidence of our civilization being more prison-like than ever.
Don't get me wrong i have no hate for cats, but there is a clear imbalance between the ideal pets that is too large not to notice.

I prefer cats because i grew up having cats as pets and they're a bit cuter, but dogs give you more responsibility and are more fun to take care of, making them the better pet (except for their odor).
