Sonic 4 isn't even part of the main-line series anymore.
Sonic 06 (in MY opinion) is a pretty ok game, the gem system adds a level of skill to the very open and explorative levels, level types you simply cannot in something like Mario.
Forces as a whole is just stupidly easy to the point of being boring.
Lost World is a VERY subjective game.
Superstars is also a VERY subjective game.

Frontiers from all perspectives is a flawed game that deserves all the criticism it gets, the cut-scenes all resemble what a child would make in SFM as all the characters do nothing but stand still while their talking animation loops.
The level design in the Open-Zone doesn't work well with Sonics moveset as he's constantly flying off random pieces of loose collision and when that's not happening your sticking to surfaces like your shoes are glued to the ground.
The Cyberspace is just plain lazy, the physics also stink, as they just don't play well with the ported Generations and Adventure 2 levels and don't get me started on the fucking horrendous story and collectathon gameplay because I'd be here all day.

Sega of America and Sega of Japan spent literal years trying to tard-wrangle each-other because they didn't know what the actual fuck to do now that they're main selling point "BLAST PROCESSING" is now a literal nothingburger.
You can always argue that the Adventure games were cutting edge due to how "loose" the game was with it's physics and muh momentum but kids simply do NOT care about any of these things, kids, also known as the main market for the entire franchise as we know it.

Frontiers was built off of Forces, Forces was built off of Lost World, the same Lost World that is notable for having a RUN button.

This entire issue could be resolved if SEGA just wrote new code instead of pseudo-fixes, or better yet, RE-USE the Generations movement code.

Without the amazing music and the YM2612 by extention, the Classic trilogy would've never reached the impeccable status it has now.
Imagine how raisin the ending of Sonic 2 would've been if it didn't have such a great backing track to really get across the "we did it" energy that just ties the knot so well on the adventure.
Same goes for the other Sonic games on the Genesis / Mega Drive.
