I personally like it, it's good for singleplayer sessions when you're alone and want to do NPC battles with the spooky vantablack nigger demon gmod9 or however the singleplayer vidya is scary

What I do with these addons is not just focusing on maps that look exactly like real life or try to imitate it, I often choose whatever maps are in the workshop that look interesting, just to keep the Gmod charm in it. For example; I recall playing one of these weird abstract nigger fart poop maps which are flooding the workshop with some of my realism addons and it was fun
Best replacement for the Combine if you don't want to go for realistic soldier with 4K fabric textures fully modeled 'slot nor whatever polar opposite is to what I've described is the Trepang2 replacements, it isn't too realistic but neither too cartoony
Best weapon base for realism has to be MW Base, while literally every single swep made in the default HL2 base is better than any user made weapon base in the workshop (except M9K, they're old but still work), MW Base works because of the feel and the sounds these weapons have, they're really good. However, I do suggest using compressed versions of MW Base weapons instead of the main ones due to these things making you download an entire game's weight for haha 2 realistic weapon with all bullets modeled inside the magazine, nobaldi cares if the weapon texture is blurry
To only downside when playig with Gmod in this style is that you will encounter lua errors, its space requirement is bigger than India's population (albeit this can be solved with compressed versions) and it will eat your FPS
