21st century = Asian cultural century
Let's leave power politics out of this and focus on culture + soft power
We are in the third industrialized mass culture centiry
1st = 1800s
2nd = 1900s
3rd = 2000s
1800s = European cultural century. European styles were in vogue all over the world. European music, fashion, literature, etc. Other countries felt they "had to catch up". USA for instance felt inadequate at not having developed a cultural canon and Asians and Africans scrambled to "Europeanize" to show they were aptly civilized
20th century = American cultural century. American culture swept the world and Europeans were often bitter. I loved to read Knut Hamsun's book as it shows anger at European cultural capital dying to USA in such a good way. For instance, Jazz, rock, hip hop, funk, disco, soul, etc. USA movies, USA blue jeans, USA food. To be American was to be cool.
21st century = Asian cultural century. Just as the 20th century the first 20 years or so was a transitionairy period from the last. For instance in 1900s and 1910s you had orchestral music at it's last gasp of mainstream with minimalism and the last gasp of top post-impressionists etc. But after ww1 USA took over with jazz and then cinema etc. In 21st century American culture dominated until Trump, which is Asia's "WW1 moment" Immedietly USA fell off the top of cultural cool and Asia took up the mantle. Much like USA in the late 1800s, first 20 years of 1900s, Asia was already gaining popularity and easily took advantage of the crisis. now all the major stars are asian, asian cinema is in, asian fashion is in, asia is the culture of the century.
In 1800s European guy was sexy
1900s American guy was sexy
Now Asian guys are sexy as lots of new sex symbols are Asian
Who will be 22nd century culture leader?
