"selftext": "I'm just gonna repost what was said by someone in another thread\n\n\n\n\\> Being able to talk to other people in my situation as a teenager on social media helped me realise I was transgender and accept myself. My internet friends have helped me through a lot of tough times in my life.\n\n\n\n\\> So \\*I\\* would have been hurt had this been in place during, say, covid, when my mental health was spiralling and my online friends were the only thing keeping me tethered to the ground. And there’s going to be a lot of people who are going to be hurt. No ifs, no buts.\n\n\n\n\\> Thankfully this wasn’t \\*my\\* situation, but for a lot of people in abusive, controlling households, social media is their one escape — and, indeed, sometimes the only way they find out that what’s happening to them \\*is\\* abuse. What does this mean for you?

It means that if you want to be able to use a social media service - defined as any service that has open chat communications, or provides an "addictive feed", or operates with user-generated content (basically any online service nowadays) - must turn off all open chat functions and the social media feed for any user determined to be under the age of 18. These functions will be off by default until a user (you) submit to ID Verification, which will likely include a biometric facial scan and upload a government issued ID to a private company, who will store that data on their servers.

This is a parental responsibility bail out. If a parent were to drop off their child at Walmart and leave them there for hours, completely unsupervised, and they start chatting with a stranger who later assaults them, the parents would instantly get a visit from CPS and likely charged. Yet somehow, because a parent allowing this in the digital world is determined to be different, every New Yorker (soon to be every American - just wait) must have their anonymity online get destroyed and the security of their most sensitive data (biometrics and government issued IDs) compromised.

I am a parent and I find this push to strip anonymity from the digital space as an abhorrent assault on our personal freedoms.

Do you play any games that allow chat? Those are called out in this bill. You will no longer be able to chat until you submit to ID Verification.

More importantly, you'll need to do this for every service that falls under the law and there is no guideline on how ID Verification will be handled. The law says "commercially reasonable" methods of performing ID Verification. You might have to submit your biometric scans and government IDs to multiple different companies who will store and hold your most sensitive data for years.

This is all happening because parents of young kids are giving their kids access to the open internet without performing any actions that should be considered reasonable and responsible supervision of their child's actions.

WojakTemplate is a subreddit dedicated to posting wojak memes. For the longest time, the subreddit served that purpose, with most of the top posts either satirizing extremism or mocking it. The subreddit was mostly inactive until five months ago, when users of the 4chan splinter site "soyjak party" began posting to there. The website is infamous for its raids against various sites (including Reddit) and their doxxing of trans artists- they even claim credit for causing the suicide of two trans individuals.

The subreddit is a bigoted cesspool that has been effectively unmoderated for so long that an off-site Nazi 4chan knockoff started using it as a place to post bigotry. I highly recommend reporting the posts on that subreddit to Reddit's admins, as I have, as it is very evident the moderators see no issue with the kind of content frequently posted on their subreddit.
I want to preface this by saying that I'm not transphobic, homophobic, or anything like that. I'm asexual and have been a part of lgbt spaces for a while, but as I've grown more aware of how insidious porn is, the more I've become less welcome in those spaces, and my calls for limiting childrens' exposure to porn as much as possible have gotten me labeled a puritan, a TERF, a republican, a fascist, a pick-me, and I've even been compared to Jews who supported Hitler before the holocaust. It pisses me off because the LGBT community is supposed to be about welcoming those that are marginalized, about diversity, etc, but in practice these spaces are dominated by men who talk over others. Lesbians, asexuals like me, and trans people who don't performatively sexualize themselves for straight men are viewed with suspicion of being a TERF who is out to sabotage them. These spaces are also sexualized to an insane degree, and with how these spaces are meant to be "all ages" that specifically states that teenagers are welcome, a lot of teenagers are introduced to porn or porn concepts through these spaces. think of how many "femboy" themed discord servers have gotten banned recently because of child safety reasons.
