So I've been thinking about this lately. The percentage of women that have had children historically has been about 70% and this hasn't changed. What has changed, however, is the amount of children that each woman has, now it's 1-2 when in the past century in the west it's been as high as 10 and as low as 3-4. I think it's fine that we do not grow infinitely, sub replacement fertility may lead to economic stagnation, a shrinking workforce, etc, but ultimately it is cultural to have less kids, frequently divorce partners, and so on, and what I think this reflects is Hunter gatherer societies which such as a matriarchal dominance over procreation and a lack of an institution of marriage. So in a sense, this is a sociological, anthropological return to form.
