Today at work a group of about 20 blxck folx came in (without a reservation might I add) and sat at a bar table. They all got very rowdy, and I was blessed with the opportunity to observe just how black people act given such a circumstance. It made me realize just how different white groups and black groups express mirth in a crowd. I don't just mean "Haha black people loud and uncivilized", I'm not just saying white people are quieter, but that there are more nuanced differences.
<
When the average crowd for this bar, that is to say 30 - 50 year old working-class Midwestern folk, begin to get rowdy, its generally very "rhythmic". What i mean by this is that there is an ebb and flow to the outbursts of laughter or whooping. Think of the heave-ho you would hear during heavy lifting, a slow and steady rhythm of exertion. You'll often have someone who is particularly loud and charismatic lead this rhythm, although its not always the case. Along with this, the "outbursts" are generally very controlled, as well as deep, that is to say from the chest or gut.
<
This is as opposed to when you get black crowds being rowdy. Their "outbursts", are non-rhythmic, they seem to come out at random, though they sometimes synchronize spontaneously if something happens to catch the entire group's attention at once. Each person is letting out their own noises and exclamations completely independently to one another. Their noises are also higher pitched, often more like a squeal, rather than any deep belly-laughter or whooping. I would almost compare it to a tea kettle, where instead of any mirth being expressed in bursts, its like it is all coming out in a high-pitched stream. Also, for whatever reason, black people often feel the need to stand up and maybe even jump around during these instances, rather than white people who always stay seated.

I hope this made any sense at all. Anyway, goodnight everyone and God bless.
